Character Information

Character Name: Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye
Canon: Firefly
Canon Point: Post Serenity film
Character Journal: [personal profile] shinyoptimist
Appearance:
Kaylee is slender with brown hair and brown eyes. She almost always has a smile on her face and frequently dresses in a jumpsuit, as she's often working in the engine room of Serenity.

Age: 25
History: http://firefly.wikia.com/wiki/Kaywinnet_Lee_Frye
Personality:
Kaylee is best known for her most obvious trait - her optimism. Of anyone on the crew of Serenity, Kaylee has the potential to see the good in any situation or person. She maintains a cheerful demeanor and has a smile on her face almost all of the time. Even her catchphrase "shiny", which she uses to denote that something is good or cool, conjures up the image of something bright and sunny.

Kaylee has an innate knowledge of machinery. She knows every part of Serenity and is usually able to easily diagnose issues and fix them. She doesn't mind getting dirty and working with her hands. Despite being somewhat of a tomboy, Kaylee has a girlish side to her. The shirts she wears under her coveralls are often patterned with pink flowers or Asian prints. There was also the time in the episode "Shindig" where Kaylee admired a pink, layered hoop skirt dress and Mal and the rest of the crew made fun of her a bit for wanting such a fancy dress. Sometimes, they fail to see Kaylee's feminine side under the mechanics overalls and grease.

Kaylee is sweet to everyone and a friend to all. The downside to this is that she's naive and trusting to a fault. She may not always realize when someone is dangerous, as was the case with one of Mal's old war buddies in "The Message".

Her closest relationships are with Mal, Inara, River and Simon. Mal is like an older brother to her and she has a great deal of respect for him. Likewise, Inara is like an older sister. She helps Kaylee indulge in her more feminine side and the two like to participate in girl talk. River is like a companion or younger sister. Since Kaylee is so nurturing, she's very accepting of the fact that River is different, something that River no doubt picks up on. Kaylee's had a crush on Simon ever since he first arrived on Serenity. Unfortunately the two of them often misunderstand each other, with Simon sometimes forgetting that Kaylee is really just a girl and Kaylee misinterpreting some of Simon's statements as elitist. Kaylee and Simon finally consummated their relationship at the end of the Serenity film.

Powers/Special Abilities:
It’s not a supernatural power, but Kaylee is very gifted at working with machines, particularly engines.

River Power:
Kaylee will have an ability to communicate with machines with engines. They won’t literally speak to her, but she’ll get gut feelings around them, especially if they’re broken. She’ll be able to innately tell what’s wrong with them and how to fix them.

Reason for Character Choice:
Kaylee's my favorite character on Firefly and she stands out to me for several reasons. I love how cheerful she is and the fact that she sees the bright side in everything. This is actually very unlike me, so that makes Kaylee fun to play. She's also different from the other main muses that I have. I also really love how she's a tomboy, yet has girly moments. I can relate to that. Kaylee's an optimist, but not to the point where she's annoying with it, I don't believe. I can respect that in her. Plus she makes friends with everyone, which is a great kind of character to RP as - CR everywhere!

Writing Samples

First-Person Transmission Sample:
[The screen shows a young woman staring down at her phone, confused for a moment.]

Is this workin’? Oh!

[Her eyes finally focus and she grins as she lifts the phone up to eye level.]

Hi there! Name’s Kaylee Frye and I arrived here in the water just like most of y’all did. It’s kinda weird because the place I’m from, Earth doesn’t exist anymore. So I must’ve traveled in time, which is pretty shiny, actually.

[It’s obvious that this woman is very chipper and bright, so much so that it almost seems like an act, though it’s not. Kaylee is just an incredibly happy person, even when stuck in the past and away from her beloved Serenity.]

Anyway, just wanted to say hi, I guess. Oh, and if you have any engines that need fixin’, let me know. I ain’t perfect at cars yet, but a lot of engines have the same parts, you know? Same thing makes ‘em run no matter what vehicle they’re in. So uh.. just holler if you need me.

[With another grin, she cuts off the feed.]

Third-Person Log Sample:
Being suddenly dumped into a body of cold water is certainly a rude awakening.

That was where Kaylee Frye found herself sometime after drifting off to sleep. One moment she was snug in her hammock, the next completely submerged in water. The only possible explanation she could come up with was that Serenity had crash landed on a water planet. But nothing had been wrong when she’d went to bed. Every night Kaylee checked the engine looking for any signs that something might not be right. The ship was purring like a kitten, everything completely normal before she’d tucked in. Unless they had collided with something. But then why hadn’t she woken up? And they weren’t even headed for a water planet anyway.

As Kaylee surfaced and looked around for the wreckage of her beloved ship, she discovered that she was completely alone in the water. No fuselage, no floating bits and pieces and none of the rest of her crew. An even greater panic flared up in her chest. Had everyone drowned? Had they abandoned her here? She kicked her legs furiously, trying to keep her head above the choppy waves and call out to the blurry land she saw 50 yards out.

“Help! Simon?!”

It was the first name that came to mind as she gasped for air. You see, there was a little problem with her being abandoned in the middle of a body of water. Kaylee didn’t know how to swim.

--

About 45 minutes later, after Simon had rescued her and led her to the lobby of a place he referred to as “the Residences”, Kaylee sat with a towel wrapped around her, still dripping water onto the floor. For once in her life, she was stunned into silence. These were the facts, according to Simon: they were on Earth-that-was in a city called New York, one that Kaylee remembered from her history books was supposed to be huge. Inara was the only other member of the crew that was here. As far as Simon knew, Serenity had not crashed anywhere because they were actually in the past. And, most confusing of all, Kaylee had apparently been here before. Basically none of that made any sense.

Kaylee knew she wasn’t the smartest girl in the ‘verse, but all of this was just way too much to take in. She waited in the lobby, shivering under the towel and contemplating all that had just happened while Simon went off in search of dry clothes for her.

Generally, if you want to do something to Kaylee that would cause her a moderate or greater level of physical or psychological harm, you should ask me first. This also includes any type of physical touching beyond, like, a hug.

As far as what she can do, her power is communicating with engines and I will also ask you before she uses it on your character. Or your character's engine lol.
